PNG stands for Portable Network Graphics. It is a lossless image format, with very good compression. It is also not burdened by any patents, unlike the GIF format. PNG also supports fully 24-bit images, many levels of transparency, etc.
PNG is an official W3C
recommendation for Web graphics.
